Tolerating Waiting
Tolerating Waiting
Goal
Support learners in developing the skill of waiting independently and naturally.
How
When asking a learner to wait, offer something to do—like a toy, simple task, or alternate activity—and clearly explain how long the wait will be. Use tools like timers to make this more concrete. Gradually increase independence by encouraging them to choose their own wait-time activity.
Context
Waiting is tough for many learners—even neurotypical kids struggle with this! (See our Behavior Norms Resource). Proactively practice through role-play by guiding them to an alternative activity when a request isn’t immediately available.
Tip
Waiting often happens on the go, so have a few no-materials-needed games ready. Try games like animal charades, ISpy, or copying each others’ dance moves. These quick, low-prep activities can help learners stay calm while waiting.
