Teaching to Request

Teaching to Request

Official title: Functional Communication Training (FCT)

Teaching how to ask for wants and needs

Goal

Reduce a challenging behavior by teaching the learner to request in a better, safer way.

How

First, identify the function of the behavior. Then, as a team (ideally including a BCBA, SLP, parent, and anyone else who knows the learner well), choose the word or phrase the learner can use instead. The SLP should guide which communication mode is best. Plan how to create opportunities to proactively teach and practice this phrase across activities. Keep teaching and reinforcing any independent attempts.

Context

All learners need a way to communicate their needs, but this strategy is especially important for those showing challenging behaviors. It’s often part of their Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).

Tip

This strategy depends on strong teamwork and proactive teaching. If your learner has behavior therapy or paraprofessional support, involve them in brainstorming when to practice the skill!
