Rewarding Safety
Official title: Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior (DRO)
Goal
Reduce a challenging behavior by reinforcing time periods when the behavior does not occur.
How
Set a timer based on how often the behavior usually happens. If the learner makes it through the set time without the behavior, give a reward right away.
Context
This strategy is often used when the priority is to reduce a behavior that may cause harm—like aggression or elopement—and the learner isn’t yet ready to build a replacement skill. For now, we’re just rewarding the absence of the behavior to help keep everyone safe.
Tip
Keep building connection and trust while using this strategy. As your relationship grows, you may be able to shift to a DRA and teach a specific replacement skill.
