Redirect & Encourage

Redirect & Encourage

Official title: Extinction + Redirection

Goal

Help learners shift from challenging behavior to a more helpful skill with validation and support.

How

When a challenging behavior occurs, pause and acknowledge what the learner may be feeling or needing. Then, gently guide them toward a more helpful behavior and follow through with support.

Context

Use this strategy when the challenging behavior is related to escape, access, or sensory needs. Instead of withholding support, be present and guide the learner through the moment. “Try again” might mean modeling communication, co-regulating, or offering help with the task.

Tip

For learners new to  AAC, model the communication on their device, then provide what they were requesting—without expecting them to copy you.  Keep AAC low-pressure and supportive, not work.
