Re-building Rapport

Rebuilding Rapport

Revisiting without re-triggering

Goal

Provide opportunities for feedback and emotional support.

How

After a high-intensity behavior, meet with the learner one-on-one once they are calm and the situation has passed to acknowledge what occurred. Take turns sharing how the incident affected everyone. Discuss possible triggers and solutions. Rebuild trust by showing empathy and respect.

Context

This strategy benefits both learners and staff, particularly if the experience involved a restrictive practice or high-intensity behavior with potential traumatic impacts.

Tip

If another peer was involved in the incident, guide both learners through the process with sensitivity and empathy, encouraging open communication and mutual understanding.
