Personalized Teaching

Official title: Natural Environment Teaching (NET)

Creating individualized teaching moments

Goal

Blend teaching into common and preferred activities.

How

Consider the typical activities that the learner engages in and what their preferences are. Now, review the skills that you’ve identified to teach the learner. Use your creativity to think about how you can teach those skills during these common and preferred activities.

Context

You can use this approach to teach any skill! It just takes some planning and creativity to determine how to blend teaching moments into typical daily activities. The more that you can teach skills during play, the less you’ll need to do a “work then play” structure. This teaching method also works well for teaching social skills, community skills, independence skills, and safety skills, as these are helpful to practice in real-life scenarios.

Tip

Follow their lead! Pay attention to what they enjoy doing and think, “How can I turn this into a learning moment?”
