Pairing
Pairing
Establishing a connection as the foundation of learning
Goal
Set the tone for learning by building a genuine connection.
How
Before teaching any new skills, focus on becoming part of what the learner already enjoys. As Dr. Greg Hanley says, learners do best when they are “happy, relaxed, and engaged.” Sit with them, play, and explore their favorite things—without giving directions, asking questions, or placing demands. Pairing is about showing up in their world and making your presence something they enjoy and trust.
Context
Pairing should happen regularly but is especially important at the start of a new relationship—whether with a teacher, service provider, or peer. It helps the learner connect you with positivity and safety, making future learning and collaboration smoother. Parents and teachers can pair too—just 5 minutes a day of no-demand play can go a long way.
Tip
Use items or activities the learner loves—and save a few just for your time
