Least Restrictive Blocking
Least Restrictive Blocking
Official title: Response blocking
Progressive support to maintain safety
Goal
Ensure safety for all adults and learners using the least restrictive means.
How
For learners with a history of unsafe behaviors, a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) should be in place so the team can respond consistently and compassionately. We’ve illustrated an example of using least restrictive blocking strategies, but plans should be individualized. Any adults using hands-on support should have specialized training.
Context
Blocking strategies that focus on de-escalation and hands-off methods should be included in the learner’s BIP. If unsafe behaviors have clear triggers or early warning signs, consider creating an Escalation Plan as well (see Resources for a template).
Tip
Collaborate with other team members to keep everyone safe. Use discreet signals or code words to communicate directions like “clear the students” or “call for support” without drawing extra attention or further escalating the individual.
