Individual Points Plan

Individual Points Plan

Official title: Point system

Discrete individual support to build motivation

Goal

Build specific skills for an individual by recognizing and rewarding their behaviors.

How

Set a long-term goal and identify 1–3 specific skills that will help the learner reach it. Consider their current skill level. Work with the learner to choose motivating rewards and how many points each one requires. Throughout the day, discreetly give points when they demonstrate a target skill. Once the target points are earned, they earn the reward!

Context

This strategy can be used at school to build safe and engaged behaviors or at home to build independent life skills. It works best for learners who need extra motivation and can wait for delayed rewards.

Tip

If the learner hasn’t earned a reward within 3 days, adjust the plan to make it more achievable—either by lowering the point total or offering rewards more frequently.
