Incorporating Preferences

Goal

Increase engagement and participation by connecting learning tasks to the learner’s personal interests and strengths.

How

Find out what the learner loves—whether it’s a topic, character, or hobby—and creatively embed it into instruction. Offer choices in how they show understanding, and allow space for their ideas and curiosity to shape the task.

Context

Use this strategy when motivation is low or the task feels overwhelming. It’s especially helpful for learners who thrive on autonomy, creativity, or deep interests.

Tip

Encourage students to share their preferences and creative ways of learning with peers. Use these moments to celebrate different strengths and build a more inclusive classroom where everyone’s learning style is valued.
