Expanding learning

Goal

Help learners use skills across different people, places, and situations.

How

When teaching a new skill, introduce different locations, people, and materials to help expand where and how the skill is used.

Context

Some learners may learn a new skill during structured teaching but struggle to use it in real life. By proactively showing them a variety of ways that the skill or language can be used, we help them apply it independently across real situations. This applies to all kinds of skills—like asking for help in different settings, tying different types of shoes, or ordering food at different restaurants.

Tip

Some learners benefit from first learning a skill in a structured setting, then expanding to new contexts. Others learn best by practicing in varied situations from the start. Consider what works best for your learner!
