First, Then
First, Then
Official title: Premack Principle
Using a simple, structured statement to build motivation
Goal
Increase motivation in completing non-preferred tasks.
How
Identify a reward that will likely be motivating for the learner (e.g. time on electronics, favorite snack, tickles). Make a statement in the form: “first (target task), then (reward).” Only give the reward once the learner has completed the target task.
Context
This easy-to-use phrase can be inserted throughout the day in a variety of settings. Before giving a demand, think if you can re-word it using a “first, then” phrase.
Tip
If at any time the learner needs to take a break away from the task or engage in self-regulation skills, honor and support that. When they’re ready to return, represent the “First, Then” statement to remind them of the expectation and available reward. You could also try blending this strategy with Firm, but Flexible to avoid power struggles! You can find a sample First, Then board with illustrated icons in our Resources!
