Firm, but Flexible
Firm, but Flexible
Official title: Offering shared control as a de-escalation technique
Firm in the instruction, flexible in how they do it
Goal
Avoid power struggles.
How
When a learner engages in a low-intensity challenging behavior following an instruction, consider how you can be flexible In that moment to make that instruction easier for them, avoiding a power struggle and further escalation.
Context
Use this strategy in situations where challenging behaviors are related to following directions. It can be used with learners of all ages!
Tip
Use the “Firm, but Flexible Planning Sheet” in our Resources to help brainstorm what instructions are “firm” in your classroom. Then, think about ways you can offer flexibility in these moments!
