Easy, Easy, Hard (at school)

Official title: High probability, low probability sequence that creates behavior momentum

Building momentum in starting a task

Goal

Improve task initiation.

How

Boost engagement by starting with two easy, back-to-back tasks the student(s) can quickly complete. Then give the more difficult task—by that point, they’re already following instructions and building momentum!

Context

Use this strategy individually or classwide for tasks that are hard to start (e.g., getting off electronics, transitioning, etc.). Think of a few simple directions to give right before the tricky one.

Tip

Choose easy tasks related to the target activity. For example, if the goal is attending to a book at circle time, try: “Let’s hop to our spots” → “Point to the book” → then “Time to listen.” Now they’re already engaged before the harder ask!
