Easy, Easy, Hard

Easy, Easy, Hard

Official title: High probability, low probability sequence that creates behavior momentum

Creating momentum in starting a task

Goal

Improve task initiation

How

Boost engagement by first giving two easy, back-to-back instructions the learner can quickly complete. Then give the harder task—by that point, they’re already following directions and on a roll!

Context

Use this strategy in any setting where starting a task is tough (e.g., homework, cleaning up, bedtime). Think about what’s hard for your learner to start, then choose a couple of easy instructions to give just before the tricky one.

Tip

Choose easy tasks that relate to the target task. For example, if the target is “start your homework,” begin with “Bring me your backpack” → “Come sit next to me.” By then, they’ve already begun!
