Classroom Set-up

Classroom Setup

Official title: Arranging the environment

An inclusive environment for all

Goal

Create a classroom where all learners’ needs can be easily met.

How

At the start of the year, design your classroom setup thoughtfully in consideration of learners with diverse needs. Use the example classroom illustrated as inspiration. As you meet and get to know each of your learners, adjust your classroom setup further to better meet their individual needs.

Context

Creating a purposeful and inclusive classroom environment is essential for all classrooms, not just those designated for special education. This includes incorporating visuals, offering alternative seating choices, and designating spaces for sensory and emotional regulation throughout every learning environment.

Tip

When deciding which visual supports to use, consideryour learners’ age and developmental levels over aesthetic design. For example, illustrations are symbolic, and some learners may benefit more from actual pictures. Also, plain, simple text is often easier to read than cursive for many learners.
