Check-in, Check-out
Check-In, Check-Out
Frequent feedback meetings throughout the day
Goal
Improve a learner’s behavior through scheduled reminders, encouragement, and feedback.
How
Choose 1–3 positively-worded expectations specific to the learner. Set a check-in schedule based on how often challenging behaviors occur. Collaborate with the learner and family to select motivating rewards. At morning check-in, a trusted adult reviews the expectations and encourages a positive start. During the day, check-ins include feedback and progress review. Rewards are given at scheduled times—during the day, at the end of the day, or at home.
Context
This is typically used in school settings to support individual learners with ongoing behavioral challenges. It’s especially effective for learners who enjoy adult attention and respond well to regular one-on-one check-ins.
Tip
Build independence with accountability by having the learner reflect on if they earned their points or not during each check-in. You can also decide to give bonus rewards for honesty when introducing this expectation.
