Building Working Memory

Building Working Memory

Goal

Build the ability to track and remember details during multi-step activities.

How

Introduce a range of strategies and let the learner choose which to try. Practice sequencing with “first, next, last” tasks like story retells. Reinforce retention with repetition (e.g., flashcards, memory games) and visualization strategies like memory palaces or linking ideas to vivid images. Use “chunking” to break tasks into smaller steps with checklists or sticky notes for reminders.

Context

Some strategies can be practiced proactively at home (e.g., memory games, sequencing stories), while others are best used during tasks—like checklists or chunking for classroom or homework activities.

Tip

Make it fun with recall games like “What’s Missing?” or “I Packed My Suitcase.” Activities like scavenger hunts or turn-taking memory games build working memory in playful ways.Created in collaboration with Rebecca Dumas, M.A, BCBA, Founder of Pivot Your Way
