Building Self-Monitoring Skill

Building Self-Monitoring Skills

Goal

Promote independence through self-evaluation skills.

How

Teach learners to track their own progress by setting clear goals and modeling tools like checklists, rating scales, or journals. Practice using these tools with immediate feedback and add visual supports like sticky notes. Gradually shift responsibility to the learner for monitoring their own performance.

Context

Self-monitoring works best after tasks with multiple steps or sustained effort like essays, group projects, or routines. Rating their own performance helps learners recognize strengths and identify areas to grow. Celebrate what’s going well and talk through how to improve lower-rated areas.

Tip

Use the “Individual Point System” strategy to make self-monitoring more motivating. Set 3 clear goals (e.g., bringing materials, turning in work, using respectful language), and let learners track progress with teacher sign-off to earn rewards.Created in collaboration with Rebecca Dumas, M.A., BCBA, Founder of Pivot Your Way
