Building Initiation Skills

Building Initiation Skills

Goal

Increase independence in starting tasks.

How

Identify tasks the learner struggles to start. Use strategies like: placing needed materials nearby, using the “Easy, Easy, Hard” approach (two simple tasks before the hard one), or providing a checklist that breaks the task into smaller steps.

Context

Checklists offer structured support for learners who prefer independence. For more discreet support, prep their space with materials ahead of time. The “Easy, Easy, Hard” strategy works well for learners who benefit from a little coaching to get going.

Tip

Incorporate the learner’s preferences to make tasks more engaging. Provide favorite items like colorful highlighters or gel pens, comfortable seating, or preferred snacks to create a more inviting and enjoyable start to tasks.Created in collaboration with Rebecca Dumas, M.A., BCBA, Founder of Pivot Your Way
