Building Emotional Control Skills

Building Emotional Control Skills

Goal

Build the ability to regulate emotions and respond calmly during frustration.

How

Teach regulation strategies when the learner is calm. Use role plays to practice handling pretend challenges with calming tools like deep breathing, counting, or sensory items (see “Mindful Moments” in Resources). During real moments of distress, avoid teaching—gently support and remind the learner to use what they’ve practiced. Visuals can provide quiet, in-the-moment cues.

Context

When learners experience escalated emotions, they struggle to think clearly or learn new skills. Teaching them how to return to a calm, engaged state is crucial for success in all other Executive Function domains.

Tip

Offer a variety of strategies to match different needs. Some learners want connection, others need space. Use a choice board or strategy wheel so they can pick what works best.Created in collaboration with Rebecca Dumas, M.A., BCBA, Founder of Pivot Your Way
