Altering the Environment
Altering the Environment
Changing the setting to set up the learner for success
Goal
Plan ahead to prevent challenging behaviors.
How
Identify elements that often lead to more challenging behaviors. Consider how set up the environment to reduce these triggers so the learner is more likely to succeed.
Context
Consider the context in which the learner typically engages in challenging behavior; then alter that environment to set the learner up for success.
Examples
- Change where the learner is sitting—minimize distraction
- Clear the table prior to starting homework to prevent throwing behavior
- Sit between learner and peer to prevent/block aggressive behavior
Tip
You can also alter the environment to promote positive behaviors.Try
- Placing sensory items where the learner has easy access in order to promote appropriate sensory play
- Placing communication cards near the learner while they are working on a difficult task as a reminder of how to ask for help
