5:1 Praise to Redirections
5:1 Praise to Redirections
Goal
Strengthen relationships and reduce challenging behavior by leading with positivity.
How
The 5:1 ratio means aiming for five moments of praise for every one redirection. Don’t worry about counting each one; instead, keep the overall balance positive by “catching them being good.” If you find yourself giving several redirections, look for small successes to celebrate throughout the day. Imagine how the space would feel to a visitor—aim for an atmosphere that feels uplifting and supportive!
Context
Research shows a 5:1 ratio builds confidence, improves engagement, and reduces challenging behavior. In classrooms, it might be group praise during transitions. In ABA therapy, it’s often individualized. At home, it could be recognizing everyday positive actions.
Tip
Be specific and sincere. Notice the little things and respond with a smile, thumbs-up, or kind word. Genuine praise builds connection and strengthens your positive environment
